Kersasp:\u00a0 Hello there!\u00a0 Wasn’t that you in the paper’s city section?\u00a0 The story about the attempted jewellery store robbery?<\/p>\n

California Valley Girl:\u00a0 Yeah, that’s me and I’m a lucky gal!\u00a0 I wuz standing on the inside of there shop window when some robber smashed it with an iron rod and it broke.\u00a0 Luckily the glass didn’t, like, shatter into sharp flying pieces \u00d0 it broke into big slabs that just fell down.\u00a0 And the edges weren’t even sharp!<\/p>\n

K:\u00a0 Aha\u00d1 then that wasn’t glass; that was acrylic.\u00a0 Lucky you; smart shopkeeper!<\/p>\n

CVG:\u00a0 Oh! It was?\u00a0 How d’ya know?<\/p>\n

K:\u00a0 You just described it.\u00a0 Upon impact glass shatters into sharp-edged pieces.\u00a0 And because glass is dense, pieces can travel for a good distance.\u00a0 But acrylic, well, it is almost unbreakable and when it does rupture, it breaks off into large pieces \u00d0 after all, it is a heat-formed polymer with large molecular bonds.\u00a0 And because it’s not dense, like glass, pieces are much lighter and so they don’t fly through the air.<\/p>\n

CVG:\u00a0 I’ve heard the word ‘acrylic’ most commonly as . . . like, ya know, it’s a paint, a colouring medium.\u00a0 So . . .<\/p>\n

K:\u00a0 Sure, to an artist the word ‘acrylic’ will have a very specific meaning.\u00a0 You have water colours, oil paints, acrylic colours, and so on.<\/p>\n

CVG:\u00a0 How can acrylic be both \u00d0 you say it’s a glass-like thingy so how can it also be a type of paint or colour?<\/p>\n

K:\u00a0 Colours or paints comprise of pigment and a ‘carrier’ that is a suspension or emulsion.\u00a0 The carrier in ‘acrylic colours’ is an acrylic polymer.\u00a0 It brings elasticity to the emulsion; as a result it is adaptable to temperature variations and will expand and contract, and so acrylic colours do not crack.\u00a0 That’s the advantage of acrylic colour \u00d0 it doesn’t crack like oil paint.<\/p>\n

CVG:\u00a0 What about the advantages, then, of acrylic \u00d0 I mean solid acrylic?\u00a0 And does it have any disadvantages?<\/p>\n

K:\u00a0 Advantages?\u00a0 Like how!\u00a0 It is highly light transmissive, it won’t crystallize or get cloudy, it’s lightweight and it’s long lasting.\u00a0 That’s several good reasons that that shopkeeper chose acrylic storefront windows.\u00a0 Probably its only disadvantage is that it must be kept away from extreme heat else it will deform.\u00a0 But over and above everything I think that acrylic’s shatter-resistance is its most prized property.\u00a0 You know, 32 millimetre acrylic of good quality is bullet resistant, it’s ‘bullet-proof’.<\/p>\n

CVG:\u00a0 I know plexiglass is bulletproof too.\u00a0 Are acrylic sheets better than plexiglass \u00d0 ya know, are they clearer and harder to break?<\/p>\n

K:\u00a0 Well, that depends on which acrylic sheets you’re comparing to ‘plexiglass’ \u00d0 because Plexiglas is a brand-name for a particular company’s acrylic sheets!\u00a0 Just like Frigid-Air was a refrigerator brand-name that became synonymous with the word ‘refrigerator’ so too Plexiglas has become like, well, a common noun!\u00a0 Plexiglas is the first, original acrylic that was invented by Rohm & Haas and is still made by them.<\/p>\n

CVG:\u00a0 Huh!\u00a0 Are there any other brand-names for acrylic?<\/p>\n

K:\u00a0 Have you heard of Lucite or Perspex?\u00a0 Those too are well-known acrylic brands.<\/p>\n

CVG:\u00a0 Oh yeah \u00d0 my gran has a Lucite 3D picture tile!\u00a0 So I guess acrylic has other uses besides windows and things?<\/p>\n

K:\u00a0 Lots and lots!\u00a0 Decorative items like those picture tiles and skylights, glasses, displays, knick-knacks, helmet visors, drinking glasses, aircraft windows\u00d1<\/p>\n

CVG:\u00a0 I though those aircraft windows were made of a thick plastic!<\/p>\n

K:\u00a0 You’re not too far off.\u00a0 Acrylic is a type of ‘thermoplastic’ which a part of our daily lives.\u00a0 You may not have heard of polycarbonate but you’ve definitely handled it hundreds of times \u00d0 you’ve played CDs and DVDs, right?\u00a0 Polycarbonate too is a thermoplastic, of which there are over 30.\u00a0 The common factor is that both acrylic and polycarbonate are made of polymer resins.\u00a0 The most endemic one is polyethylene, often misspelt and mispronounced as ‘polythene’.\u00a0 That’s what plastic bags are made out of.<\/p>\n

CVG:\u00a0 D’ya know how acrylic made?<\/p>\n

K:\u00a0 Yup.\u00a0 Briefly, good quality acrylic is made by a casting process.\u00a0 Semi-liquid acrylic under high heat is poured into wide, broad moulds.\u00a0 After it cools and hardens in the moulds it is removed.\u00a0 If needed, pieces can be cut using either a laser or a specially built circular saw.\u00a0 Moderate heat is used to smooth out the cut edges, and buffing cloth is used to polish them.<\/p>\n

CVG:\u00a0 Gee, you’re real smart!<\/p>\n

K:\u00a0 Uh, well, almost everyone says that.\u00a0 Welcome to the club!<\/p>\n

CVG:\u00a0 Ha, ha!\u00a0 Tell me, how can you know when something is acrylic?<\/p>\n

K:\u00a0 Well, one simple rule is that anything that’s transparent or translucent, is hard and isn’t glass, is probably acrylic.<\/p>\n

CVG:\u00a0 Then how wi\u00d1<\/p>\n
